COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic had a meeting today with Nebojsa Stefanovic, Minister of Internal Affairs, to discuss possible improvements in the regulatory framework and other conditions concerning the various forms of personal data processing conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In addition to a number of topics concerning personal data processing, the parties focused in particular on the issues of video surveillance for traffic safety purposes. They agreed that the system used for this purpose is in need of improvement, not only in the light of the several tragic events which have been very much in the public eye in recent days, but also given the overall situation in this field.

The Commissioner and the Minister agreed that relevant regulatory, financial, material and logistical assumptions had to be put in place to facilitate the operation of a modern road traffic surveillance system that would allow the police to efficiently identify the committers of criminal offences and obtain sufficient evidence for their criminal prosecution, while at the same time guaranteeing that personal data would be used solely for those purposes that are allowed under the law, eliminating or minimising the scope for potential abuse of such data and providing reassurances that, should any abuse take place, those responsible would be easily identified and penalised.
