COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

Expired

The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance took part in the Conference “Implementation of the Law on Free Access to Information - a year and a half later”, organized by the NGO Coalition on Free Access to Information, coordinated by the Open Society Fund and supported by EAR and the Council of Europe.

The Conference was attended by the organizers and by numerous Serbian and foreign experts.

Commissioner Rodoljub Šabić spoke of the achieved results and highlighted the problems encountered in the implementation of the Law. The Commissioner reminded that certain problems - including low skill levels among public administration staff, lack of a supervision system, absence of prosecution for perpetrators, non-existence of enforcement mechanisms for the Commissioner's decisions and lack of necessary laws - are becoming chronic.

Among other things, Commissioner Rodoljub `abi pointed out:

”The problems mentioned here are significant and numerous. As such, they raise serious concerns for all those who are eager to see the Law properly implemented. However, what I see as an even greater concern is the fact that these problems had been identified some time ago and that I had formally pointed out to them on a number of occasions, and yet, the Government and the Ministries responsible for addressing such problems have done little or nothing to overcome them.”
