A recent assessment of the Commissioner for Information (of public importance and) for the protection of personal data, some issues regarding the assignment of bank claims by citizens, agencies, debt collection point to the need for the state a lot more attention to the protection of personal data and the announcement that the in relation to initiate amendments of some laws have sparked quite a number of reactions. The vast majority, to my satisfaction, was positive. Yet there is always some “happiness spoiler”.
Absolutely predominant part of the support was given to the efforts of citizens to obtain all relevant information, and that the new creditor cannot bring them in an unfavorable position. It is nice, but my basic idea was something else. The transfer includes the transfer of of personal data of the debtor and I felt an obligation to point out the importance of the question - how much data is transferred, why and under what circumstances, and especially whether and how to protect data?
The misuse of data on someone else's personality, "identity theft" of another person in order to obtain a benefit or harm is a phenomenon of global dimensions and great significance. The harmful effects of identity theft to the relevant subjects, eg. Center for Resources on Internet scams (ITRC), expressed in dozens and dozens of fantastic billion. And only material damage (drain bank accounts, purchase goods and services, creating a liability). Other forms of damage because of the nature "attacked" the good, (reputation, emotions, problems in communicating with people and the law, etc.) remain in the "gray zone".
The vast majority of countries in the world are making significant efforts to improve the level of protection of personal data. These efforts include a series of government measures and, especially important, educating the wider population, because the relevant information to citizens important prerequisite for effective protection. We have no reason to be satisfied with what we take in any field or in the background. It is high time to change it - it is dangerous to live in the illusion that what is happening all around us, does not concern us.
