Today, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection has received the Ambassador Andrea Orizio, Head of the OSCE Mission to Belgrade, who was accompanied by Michael Uyehara, Deputy Head of the Mission, and Giovanni Gabassi, Chief of Cabinet, and they discussed further cooperation between this international organization and the institution of the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection.

Recently, a large number of citizens, who consider the actions of the representatives of political parties with regard to the election campaign a violation of civil liberties and privacy, have addressed the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, in different ways. The citizens are particularly concerned about the potential misuse of a variety of personal data, which are usually either processed in databases held by public authorities for purposes stipulated by law or in telephone or internet operators’ databases, which must also be protected, by party activists through the "door to door" campaign, and through electronic communication.

In the letter, addressed to the Prosecutor, Zagorka Dolovac, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, Rodoljub Sabic, has highlighted that the document of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, which was received by the Commissioner yesterday, contains insinuations without any factual or legal grounds that the Commissioner has allegedly committed a criminal offense of some sort, it is not clear which one, and that objectively it cannot be understood otherwise than as a threat, or as an impermissible attempt to influence the independent institution of the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection.

Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection is addressing the public, on occasion of the news about the forwarding of the data held by telecom operators’ clients to the Credit Bureau, asking for comment and opinions of a large number of media representatives and citizens.

In this regard, the Commissioner informs the public that his position on the intended data processing is already known and that the said position was communicated to the telecom operators late last year.
